Summary

Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreaticography (MRCP) is a reliable method for diagnosing primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). The RARE sequence demonstrated the highest diagnostic accuracy among T2-weighted sequences for detecting PSC.

Background:

  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic liver disease characterized by bile duct inflammation and fibrosis.
  • Accurate diagnosis and monitoring of PSC are crucial for patient management and prognosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic performance of MR cholangiopancreaticography (MRCP) for primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC).
  • To compare the accuracy of various T2-weighted sequences in MRCP for PSC detection.
  • To correlate MRCP findings with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreaticography (ERCP) as the gold standard.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty-five patients with suspected PSC underwent MRCP using a 1.5 T MR unit with HASTE, RARE, and TS-HASTE sequences.
  • Two blinded investigators assessed image quality and documented morphologic criteria of PSC.
