Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Oncology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare neoplasms.
  • Small intestine GISTs are exceptionally uncommon.
  • Recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding and anemia can be presenting symptoms.

Observation:

  • A female patient presented with severe anemia and recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding.
  • Initial endoscopic evaluation was negative.
  • Computed tomography and ultrasound visualized a tumor but lacked precise localization.

Findings:

  • Small intestine passage enteroclysis and abdominal ultrasound were inconclusive for precise tumor location.
  • Selective angiography of the celiac axis and superior mesenteric artery identified the small intestinal tumor.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of gastrointestinal stromal tumor.
  • Implications:

    • Selective angiography is crucial for diagnosing small intestine GISTs when other methods fail.
    • Gastrointestinal stromal tumors of the small intestine, though rare, must be considered in the differential diagnosis of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding.
    • Accurate radiological diagnosis facilitates timely surgical intervention and improves patient outcomes.
