Background:

  • Suprascapular nerve compression can cause shoulder pain and infraspinatus muscle dysfunction.
  • Paralabral ganglion cysts are a common cause of suprascapular nerve compression in the spinoglenoid notch.

Observation:

  • This study investigated enlarged veins in the spinoglenoid notch as an alternative cause of suprascapular nerve compression.
  • Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was used to evaluate six patients with chronic shoulder pain.

Findings:

  • Patients with suprascapular nerve compression exhibited significantly enlarged spinoglenoid notch vascular structures (average 8.4 mm) compared to controls (average 2.2 mm).
  • All six patients showed infraspinatus muscle atrophy and fatty infiltration on MR imaging.
  • Surgical exploration in three patients confirmed a venous varix in the spinoglenoid notch.
