Summary

Surgical glove changes during operations can be done with open or closed techniques. This study compared contamination levels between these two methods, finding significant differences in glove and hand contamination.

Background:

Intraoperative surgical glove changes are common practice.

To compare glove and hand contamination between the open technique (OT) and closed technique (CT) for intraoperative surgical glove changes.
To assess the effectiveness of different glove changing methods in preventing contamination.

A survey of 25 surgeons and 25 scrub staff on their glove changing techniques.
Prospective comparison of contamination between OT and CT.
Application of fluorescent powder to forearms before donning gowns and gloves.
