Summary

Serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels correlate with prostatic epithelial volume in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia. A new method for measuring this volume is convenient for clinical use.

Background:

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in aging men.
  • Accurate estimation of prostatic epithelial volume is crucial for understanding BPH and its relationship with serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate a novel, simple method for measuring prostatic epithelial volume.
  • To assess the relationship between serum PSA levels and prostatic epithelial volume in patients with BPH.

Main Methods:

  • A new method was developed to calculate prostatic epithelial volume using the epithelium/glandular lumen ratio and percentage of glandular lumen.
  • Computer image analysis was employed to measure these ratios in 122 patients with BPH.
  • The calculated epithelial volume was correlated with serum PSA levels, total prostate volume, transition zone volume, and percentage of epithelium.
