High parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels may increase ischemic stroke risk in elderly women. This may be linked to higher rates of hypertension in women with hyperparathyroidism.

  • Hyperparathyroidism is commonly linked to hypertension.
  • Osteoporosis in elderly women can trigger compensatory hyperparathyroidism.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if hyperparathyroidism is a risk factor for ischemic stroke in elderly women.
  • To explore the relationship between parathyroid hormone levels, bone mineral density, and ischemic stroke.

Main Methods:

  • Serum PTH levels and bone mineral density (BMD) were measured in 107 elderly ischemic stroke patients (>=65 years).
  • A control group of 107 healthy volunteers, matched for age and sex, was used for comparison.
  • Statistical analyses, including multiple logistic regression, were performed.

  • Female stroke patients exhibited lower BMD and higher serum PTH compared to controls, with a negative correlation between the two.
  • A subgroup of female stroke patients (high PTH group) showed significantly longer intervals between menopause and stroke.

  • Male stroke patients showed normal BMD and PTH levels.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated serum PTH may be associated with an increased incidence of ischemic stroke in women.
  • Hypertension appears to be a potential mediating factor in this association.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms linking PTH and stroke risk in postmenopausal women.
