Botryomycosis in an HIV-positive subject

A rare case of botryomycosis, a bacterial skin infection, was diagnosed in an AIDS patient. Prompt surgical excision and antimicrobial therapy successfully treated the painful skin ulcers and systemic symptoms.

Background:

Findings:
- Bacterial culture confirmed Staphylococcus aureus as the causative agent.
- Viral cultures were negative, ruling out common viral etiologies.
- The patient was diagnosed with botryomycosis.
Implications:
- Surgical excision of large lesions combined with appropriate antimicrobial therapy led to complete resolution of symptoms.
- This case highlights the importance of considering botryomycosis in immunocompromised patients with atypical skin infections.
- Further research into botryomycosis in the context of HIV infection is warranted.
