Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Endocrinology

Background:

  • Headache is a frequent symptom in patients with pituitary tumors, even with small lesions.
  • The size of the pituitary tumor may not solely determine the severity of headache.

Observation:

  • Two cases of prolactinoma-associated headaches are presented.
  • One patient experienced short-lasting unilateral headache attacks with conjunctival injection and tearing (SUNCT).
  • The second patient presented with hemicrania continua and idiopathic stabbing headache.

Findings:

  • Dopamine agonist administration exacerbated headache symptoms in both reported cases.
  • This suggests a complex interaction between prolactinomas, headache disorders, and their treatments.

Implications:

  • These cases highlight the need to consider specific headache diagnoses in pituitary tumor patients.
  • Further research into the pathophysiology of pituitary tumor-related headaches and treatment responses is warranted.
