Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Cutaneous sarcoidosis presents in various forms, with lesions localized to sun-exposed areas being exceptionally rare.
  • This report details the fourth documented case of this specific presentation.

Observation:

  • A 51-year-old woman with skin phototype V presented with facial papular erythema unresponsive to topical steroids.
  • A biopsy confirmed non-caseating granuloma consistent with sarcoidosis; systemic evaluation and phototesting were negative.

Findings:

  • The patient achieved successful treatment with chloroquine, indicating a potential therapeutic avenue.
  • Despite negative phototesting, the clinical presentation strongly suggests a role for light exposure.

Implications:

  • This case, along with three prior reports, supports the recognition of photo-induced sarcoidosis as a unique clinical entity.
