Background:

  • Laparoscopic living donor nephrectomy (LDN) has become widespread since its inception in 1995.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of strictly laparoscopic transperitoneal donor nephrectomy.
  • To compare graft function in recipients of LDN with conventionally harvested kidneys.

Main Methods:

  • 63 strictly laparoscopic, transperitoneal LDNs were performed between February 1999 and September 2002.
  • Data collected included operating time, warm ischemic time, and postoperative hospital stay.
  • Recipient renal function and creatinine levels were assessed one year post-transplant.

  • Mean warm ischemic time was 148 seconds; mean operating time was 203 minutes.
