Summary

Host-guest complexes were formed using calix[4]resorcarene and chiral molecules through solid-solid grinding. The resulting complexes showed circular dichroism (CD) Cotton effects, revealing the guest molecule's absolute configuration.

Area of Science:

  • Supramolecular Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry
  • Chiroptical Spectroscopy

Background:

  • Calix[4]resorcarenes are macrocyclic compounds known for their ability to form host-guest complexes.
  • Chiral molecules possess non-superimposable mirror images, making their absolute configuration crucial in various scientific fields.
  • Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy is a powerful technique for probing the chirality of molecules.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the formation of host-guest complexes between calix[4]resorcarene and chiral molecules.
  • To explore the utility of solid-solid grinding as a method for complex formation.
  • To determine if the formed complexes exhibit detectable chiroptical signals indicative of guest absolute configuration.

Main Methods:

  • Solid-solid grinding of calix[4]resorcarene with various chiral guest molecules.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Characterization of the resulting complexes using techniques such as NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography (if applicable).
  • Measurement of circular dichroism (CD) spectra to observe Cotton effects.
  • Main Results:

    • Efficient formation of host-guest complexes was achieved via solvent-free solid-solid grinding.
    • The CD spectra of the complexes displayed distinct Cotton effects.
    • These Cotton effects correlated with the known absolute configurations of the chiral guest molecules, demonstrating a chiral recognition capability.

    Conclusions:

    • Solid-solid grinding is an effective and green method for synthesizing calix[4]resorcarene-chiral guest complexes.
    • The observed CD Cotton effects serve as a reliable indicator of the guest molecule's absolute configuration.
    • This approach offers a promising strategy for chiral sensing and determination of absolute configuration in supramolecular chemistry.
