Summary

Vagal nerve input in cats is located in a distinct cortical area (3a), separate from the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) representation of touch. This finding suggests a role in visceral sensation or motor control.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Somatosensory System
  • Visceral Afferent Pathways

Background:

  • Penfield's sensory homunculus suggested visceral organ representation at the cortex's lateral extreme.
  • Vagal input was recently localized lateral to intraoral representation in rat primary somatosensory cortex (S1).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the cortical localization of vagal nerve input in cats.
  • To determine if vagal input in cats is situated similarly to rats and other somatic inputs.

Main Methods:

  • Recording field potentials from the dura mater over the cat's left hemisphere.
  • Electrical stimulation of the left or right cervical vagus nerve.
  • Microelectrode mapping at the pial surface and depth recordings to identify vagal-evoked potentials and S1 mechanoreceptive fields.

Main Results:

  • A distinct vagal-evoked potential site was identified in the lateral sigmoid gyrus, anteromedial to the coronal sulcus.
  • This site was located in cortical area 3a, anterior to the S1 intraoral representation and adjacent to the masseteric nerve focus.
  • Depth recordings confirmed afferent activation in the middle cortical layers.

Conclusions:

  • Vagal input in cats targets cortical area 3a, differing from the S1 (area 3b) localization of cutaneous input.
  • This suggests vagal input resembles deep somatic or nociceptive input localization in area 3a.
  • The findings support potential roles for this vagal input in motor control or visceral sensory experience.
