Summary

Surgical repair of ventral wall hernias varies widely, with sutured repairs most common. Further clinical trials are needed to determine the optimal surgical management for these frequent abdominal wall defects.

Background:

Ventral wall hernias are a common surgical condition.
Current surgical management lacks standardized guidelines.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the current surgical repair methods for abdominal wall hernias.
To analyze the types and indications for ventral hernia repair in West Scotland.

Main Methods:

Retrospective data collection over a 3-month period.
Analysis of 120 patients with incisional, umbilical, and epigastric hernias.
Categorization of repair techniques: sutured, mesh, and Mayo repair.

Main Results:

Pain was the primary indication for repair (78%).
Sutured repairs were most frequent (55%), followed by mesh (29%).

Conclusions:

Significant variability exists in surgical practices for ventral wall hernia repair.
There is a need for clinical trials to establish evidence-based guidelines for optimal repair methods.
