Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Cataract surgery with monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) often results in dependence on glasses for near vision.
  • Multifocal IOLs offer a potential solution for spectacle independence after cataract surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical performance and patient experience with the multifocal MF4-Lens.
  • To assess visual acuity, patient satisfaction, and spectacle dependence following MF4-Lens implantation.

Main Methods:

  • The MF4-lens was implanted in 80 eyes of 40 patients.
  • Visual acuity (uncorrected and corrected) was assessed at 3 months post-surgery.
  • Patient-reported outcomes including satisfaction, optical phenomena, and spectacle dependence were collected via questionnaire.

Main Results:

  • No surgical complications were reported.
  • 92% achieved uncorrected visual acuity of 0.5 (20/40) or better; 86% had uncorrected near vision of 0.8 (20/25) or better.
  • 94% of patients were satisfied, with 67% becoming totally independent of glasses.

Conclusions:

  • The MF4-lens is an effective multifocal IOL for improving near vision and patient satisfaction after cataract surgery.
  • A significant majority of patients experienced reduced dependence on glasses.
