Summary
Melatonin supplements did not improve sleep quality in older adults with age-related sleep issues. This study found no significant benefits of 5 mg melatonin for sleep maintenance problems in the elderly.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Sleep Medicine
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Age-related sleep maintenance problems are common in older adults.
- Melatonin is a hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles.
- Its efficacy in improving sleep in the elderly with sleep disturbances is not fully understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the effectiveness of melatonin in enhancing sleep quality in healthy older individuals experiencing age-related sleep maintenance difficulties.
- To assess the impact of a 5 mg melatonin dose on various sleep parameters.
Main Methods:
- A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial was conducted.
- Participants included healthy older volunteers (65+ years) with and without sleep problems.
- Sleep quality was evaluated using sleep diaries, questionnaires, and actigraphy over 4-week treatment periods with melatonin or placebo, separated by a washout period.
Main Results:
- No significant difference in melatonin secretion was observed between groups.
- Melatonin supplementation did not lead to significant improvements in any measured sleep parameters for either group.
- Self-reported sleep quality indicators showed initial differences between groups but were not improved by melatonin.
Conclusions:
- A 5 mg dose of fast-release melatonin taken at bedtime is ineffective in improving sleep quality for older individuals with age-related sleep maintenance problems.
- Further research may be needed to explore other melatonin formulations or dosages, or alternative interventions for sleep disturbances in the elderly.
