Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Spontaneous pancreatic hemorrhage is an uncommon cause of acute abdominal distress.
  • This condition presents without apparent relation to trauma, inflammation, or vascular abnormalities.

Observation:

  • Seven patients with spontaneous pancreatic bleeding between 1972 and 2001 were reviewed.
  • All presented with abdominal pain, tenderness, and shock, necessitating exploratory laparotomy.
  • Diagnosis was confirmed intraoperatively.

Findings:

  • Suture ligation was the primary surgical intervention in all cases.
  • Five out of seven patients had uncomplicated postoperative recoveries.
  • Two patients experienced fatal outcomes, indicating significant morbidity and mortality.

Implications:

  • Spontaneous pancreatic bleeding is a rare but life-threatening emergency.
  • Preoperative diagnosis is difficult due to the acute presentation with shock.
  • Urgent surgical management is critical, but carries a high immediate mortality risk.
