Continuing medical education networks effectively promoted Helicobacter Pylori Eradication Therapy (HPET) for duodenal ulcers (DU) among general practitioners. This intervention significantly increased HPET prescription rates, demonstrating a successful model for implementing best practices.

Background:

  • Helicobacter Pylori (H. Pylori) is the leading cause of duodenal ulcers (DU).
  • Current guidelines advocate for Helicobacter Pylori Eradication Therapy (HPET) in all DU patients.
  • However, HPET uptake remains low, particularly among patients on long-term anti-ulcer medication.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a continuing medical education (CME) network in promoting best practices for DU treatment.
  • To assess the impact of CME on the prescription rates of HPET by general practitioners (GPs).

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 98 GPs from the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) CME network.
  • Two cohorts were established: Cohort 1 received early intervention, Cohort 2 received delayed intervention.
