Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Intestinal obstruction is a serious complication of Crohn's disease.

Observation:

  • A 54-year-old woman with Crohn's disease presented with symptoms of intestinal obstruction.
  • Imaging revealed an enterolith impacted within a small bowel stricture.

Findings:

  • The impacted enterolith caused the intestinal obstruction.
  • Laparoscopy-assisted surgery was performed for resection of the diseased bowel segment.

Implications:

  • This case highlights enterolithiasis as a rare cause of obstruction in Crohn's disease.
  • Laparoscopic resection is a feasible surgical approach for such complications.
