Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology

Background:

  • Differential diagnosis for nausea and vomiting is extensive and often challenging.
  • Current pharmacotherapy for nausea and vomiting may not address underlying pathophysiology, leading to unsatisfactory treatment outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To highlight the contrast between the general difficulty in diagnosing and treating nausea and vomiting and the relative ease of diagnosing nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP).
  • To discuss the spectrum of NVP, from mild symptoms to hyperemesis gravidarum, and review various treatment approaches.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on the diagnosis and treatment of nausea and vomiting.
  • Specific focus on the diagnostic criteria and management strategies for nausea and vomiting of pregnancy.

Main Results:

  • Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy is generally straightforward to diagnose, with approximately 80% of women experiencing symptoms in the first trimester.
  • The condition presents a spectrum of severity, ranging from mild nausea to hyperemesis gravidarum.

Conclusions:

  • Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy presents a distinct and manageable clinical scenario compared to other causes of nausea and vomiting.
  • Effective management strategies for NVP exist and should be considered within the spectrum of pregnancy-related symptoms.
