Orbital metastasis from liposarcoma is rare. This case highlights the importance of suspecting metastatic liposarcoma in patients presenting with proptosis and a history of this retroperitoneal tumor.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Liposarcoma is a malignant tumor of adipose tissue.
  • Metastasis of liposarcoma to the orbit is an uncommon presentation.

Observation:

  • A 72-year-old male presented with left eye proptosis and diplopia.
  • History of surgically removed retroperitoneal liposarcoma with prior radiation therapy.
  • Orbital biopsies confirmed metastatic spindle-cell liposarcoma.

Findings:

  • Histological analysis revealed the orbital tumor was consistent with the primary retroperitoneal liposarcoma.
  • The patient experienced vision loss despite prednisolone, radio-, and chemotherapy.

Implications:

  • Orbital liposarcoma metastasis should be considered in patients with proptosis and a known liposarcoma history.
