    Summary

    Microsphere-induced intrarenal arteriolar lesions in rats mimicked benign nephrosclerosis without raising blood pressure. These findings suggest arteriolar damage may not cause hypertension.

    Background:

    • Benign nephrosclerosis is a common kidney disease characterized by vascular changes.
    • The pathogenesis of benign nephrosclerosis and its relationship to hypertension remain incompletely understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the potential role of intrarenal arteriolar lesions in the development of hypertension.
    • To create a rat model of benign nephrosclerosis to study its effects on blood pressure and kidney function.

    Main Methods:

    • Selective partial occlusion of the intrarenal arteriolar bed using microspheres in rats.
    • Measurement of blood pressure, renal vein plasma, and juxtaglomerular indices in affected kidneys.

    Main Results:

    • The induced arteriolar lesions successfully simulated benign nephrosclerosis in rat kidneys.
    • No significant elevation in blood pressure, renal vein plasma, or juxtaglomerular indices was observed.
    • The experimental model demonstrated contracted kidneys without systemic hypertensive effects.

    Conclusions:

    • Intrarenal arteriolar lesions, as modeled in this study, are unlikely to be the primary cause of hypertension.
    • The findings challenge the direct pathogenic link between arteriolar damage and the onset of elevated blood pressure.
    • Further research is needed to elucidate the complex mechanisms underlying benign nephrosclerosis and hypertension.
