Automated collision notification (ACN) systems improve emergency response times. This study found that existing cellular coverage in Erie County, New York, adequately supports ACN technology for reliable crash data transmission.

Area of Science:

  • Telecommunications Engineering
  • Emergency Medical Services Technology
  • Traffic Safety Systems

Background:

  • Automated collision notification (ACN) devices reduce emergency response times by automatically reporting crashes.
  • Current ACN systems primarily utilize cellular technology for transmitting crash data.
  • Assessing cellular network capacity is crucial for ACN system reliability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the capability of the western New York cellular analog system to support ACN systems.
  • To develop a predictive model for successful ACN call completion based on signal strength.
  • To estimate call completion times relative to received signal strength indicator (RSSI) levels.

Main Methods:

  • Developed a model to predict ACN call success probability at varying RSSI levels.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Conducted empirical estimations of call completion time based on RSSI.
  • Sampled RSSI data across Erie County, New York, to map cellular coverage.
  • Applied the model to historical crash data and compared with ACN Field Operational Test results.
  • Main Results:

    • An interpolated map indicated adequate cellular coverage in Erie County for ACN.
    • The developed model predicts the probability of successful ACN calls.
    • Empirical data provided estimates for call completion times at different signal strengths.

    Conclusions:

    • Existing cellular infrastructure in Erie County can support automated collision notification technology.
    • The study's methodologies are transferable to other regions for cellular network assessment.
    • This research supports the broader implementation of ACN systems for enhanced road safety.
