Summary

Low mannan-binding lectin (MBL) concentrations do not increase susceptibility to or affect the progression of hepatitis C infection in European patients. MBL levels did not influence treatment response, suggesting MBL replacement therapy is not indicated.

Background:

  • Previous studies suggested a link between low mannan-binding lectin (MBL) and hepatitis C (HCV) in Japanese patients.
  • MBL plays a role in innate immunity and pathogen recognition.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between MBL levels and HCV infection in European patients.
  • To determine if low MBL influences HCV susceptibility, disease progression, or treatment response.

Main Methods:

  • Serum MBL concentrations were measured in 180 HCV patients and 566 healthy blood donors.
  • MBL levels were correlated with clinical data, including disease characteristics and antiviral therapy response.

Main Results:

  • Hepatitis C patients had higher MBL concentrations than healthy controls (median 2.5 vs 1.3 microg/ml).
