Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Multiple myeloma (MM) typically presents with mature to anaplastic plasma cells.
  • A rare signet ring variant of MM has been reported previously.
  • This case highlights another instance of this unusual morphological presentation.

Observation:

  • A case of signet ring-like lambda light chain MM with extra-skeletal spread to lymph nodes, spleen, and liver is described.
  • The patient exhibited atypical clinical and pathological features.
  • Absence of bone-lytic lesions and monoclonal component on protein electrophoresis complicated the diagnosis.

Findings:

  • The described case represents a rare morphological variant of multiple myeloma.
  • Extra-skeletal involvement was a prominent feature.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Diagnostic delays occurred due to atypical presentation.
  • Implications:

    • Recognizing this rare MM variant is essential for accurate and timely diagnosis.
    • Early identification can improve patient outcomes for this specific subtype of multiple myeloma.
    • This finding contributes to the understanding of MM morphological diversity.
