Summary

Hyperinsulinemia significantly lowers adiponectin plasma levels in humans. This finding suggests that reduced adiponectin may link high insulin levels to vascular disease in metabolic syndrome.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether insulin regulates adiponectin levels in vivo in humans.
  • To determine the effect of hyperinsulinemia on circulating adiponectin concentrations under euglycemic conditions.

  • A hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp was performed on five healthy male volunteers.
  • Adiponectin plasma levels were measured using radioimmunoassay before and during steady-state hyperinsulinemia.

    Conclusions:

    • Hyperinsulinemia significantly reduces circulating adiponectin levels in humans.
    • Hypoadiponectinemia may contribute to the link between hyperinsulinemia and vascular disease in metabolic syndrome.
