[Treatment of extensive acetabular bone deficiency in revision hip arthroplasty]

Basing on a retrospective analysis of 87 cases the author presents the results of treatment of massive acetabular bone deficiency in revision hip arthroplasty. Augmentation of bony deficits with corticocancellous bone grafts and implantation of the acetabular cup in a physiological position will increase the chances of achieving a good result. Graft fixation with screws and other such devices (anti-protrusion cages) made of a different material than the prosthesis leads to lytic processes and mechanical failure of the construct. This causes early cup loosening. Chronic steroid use, intake of nitric compounds, and radiotherapy of the pelvis are all factors that influence osteolytic processes of the grafts.
