Summary

Term infants fed formulas with natural or synthetic vitamin E acetate showed adequate vitamin E status. Infants appear to differentiate between natural RRR-alpha-tocopheryl acetate and synthetic all-rac-alpha-tocopheryl acetate.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess vitamin E and antioxidant status in term infants.
  • To compare outcomes in infants fed formulas with varying amounts and forms of vitamin E acetate.

Main Methods:

  • A controlled, blinded, multisite study involving 77 term infants.
  • Infants were randomized into three formula groups: HIGHNAT-E (20 IU/L natural), LOWNAT-E (10 IU/L natural), and SYN-E (13.5 IU/L synthetic).
  • A human milk-fed group served as a reference.
