Objective:
To investigate the short-course and efficient way to treat mumps meningitis.
Methods:
Totally 155 cases of mumps meningitis treated by intrathecal injection with dexamethasone only once were enrolled as experimental group and 55 similar cases treated with the common therapy as control.
Results:
The time for recoveries of temperature, headache, the pathologic reflexes and the total time of treatment were 32 hours, 15 hours, 12 hours and 3.1 days, respectively, while those of the control group were 58 hours, 24 hours, 32 hours, 6.5 days respectively. There was statistical difference between the two groups (P<0.01 or 0.05).
Conclusions:
Intrathecal injection with dexamethasone only once is efficient and safe in the treatment of mumps meningitis.
Insights
A single intrathecal injection of dexamethasone offers an efficient and safe short-course treatment for mumps meningitis, significantly reducing recovery times compared to standard therapies.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Infectious Diseases
- Pediatrics
Background:
- Mumps meningitis is a common viral central nervous system infection.
- Standard treatments for mumps meningitis can be lengthy.
- There is a need for more efficient therapeutic strategies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a single intrathecal dexamethasone injection for treating mumps meningitis.
- To compare this novel approach with conventional therapy.
Main Methods:
- A prospective study involving 155 patients with mumps meningitis receiving a single intrathecal dexamethasone injection.
- A control group of 55 patients received standard mumps meningitis treatment.
Main Results:
- The experimental group showed significantly faster recovery times for temperature (32 vs. 58 hours), headache (15 vs. 24 hours), and pathologic reflexes (12 vs. 32 hours).
- Overall treatment duration was reduced by approximately 50% in the experimental group (3.1 vs. 6.5 days).
- Statistical significance was observed between the groups (P<0.01 or 0.05).
Conclusions:
- A single intrathecal dexamethasone injection is an effective and safe treatment for mumps meningitis.
- This method offers a shorter and more efficient therapeutic course compared to traditional treatments.
