Multiple non-contiguous spinal injuries can occur after severe motor vehicle accidents. Awareness of these complex vertebral column injuries is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective patient treatment.

Background:

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a significant cause of neurologic deficit.
Accurate diagnosis is essential for appropriate treatment of SCI patients.

Observation:

Over a 4-year period, 120 patients with neurologic defects from SCI were admitted.
Five cases (4.2%) presented with multiple, non-contiguous spinal injuries.

Findings:

These multiple injuries were severe enough to cause complete neurologic loss independently.
The study highlights the potential for concurrent, distinct vertebral column damage in trauma patients.

Implications:

Clinicians must maintain a high index of suspicion for multiple non-contiguous spinal injuries.
