Area of Science:

  • Pain Management
  • Spinal Surgery
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Chronic low back pain diagnosis is challenging due to non-invasive tests lacking specificity.
  • The efficacy of invasive diagnostic methods for low back pain has been debated.
  • Spinal discography was once considered specific for pre-fusion surgery pain identification but is now disputed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review current literature on the use of spinal external fixation for diagnosing chronic low back pain.
  • To evaluate the available evidence supporting spinal external fixation as an invasive diagnostic investigation.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of published articles on spinal external fixation in low back pain patients.
  • Analysis of studies investigating the diagnostic value of external spinal fixation.

Main Results:

  • Limited published data exists regarding the diagnostic utility of spinal external fixation.
  • Current evidence is insufficient to recommend spinal external fixation for identifying pain sources in chronic low back pain.

Conclusions:

  • The use of spinal external fixation for diagnosing chronic low back pain lacks sufficient supporting evidence.
  • Further research is needed to determine the potential role and efficacy of spinal external fixation in pain management.
