    Summary

    Degenerated red blood cells, or ghost cells, can cause severe glaucoma by blocking the trabecular meshwork. These altered cells accumulate after hemorrhage, leading to vision impairment.

    Background:

    • Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide.
    • Previous research has focused on intraocular pressure elevation due to various factors.

    Observation:

    • Degenerated red blood cells, termed "ghost cells," were observed to accumulate in the vitreous cavity following hemorrhage.
    • These ghost cells possess altered morphology, color, and reduced pliability.

    Findings:

    • Ghost cells migrated to the anterior chamber after anterior hyaloid face disruption, causing severe glaucoma.
    • The khaki-colored ghost cells obstructed the trabecular meshwork and filled the anterior chamber angle.
    • Phase-contrast microscopy confirmed the presence and characteristics of ghost cells in anterior chamber aspirates.

    Implications:

    • This study identifies a novel mechanism for secondary glaucoma.
    • Understanding the role of ghost cells may lead to new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for specific glaucoma subtypes.
    • Further research into the rheological properties of ghost cells is warranted.
