Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Soft Tissue Tumors

Context:

  • Sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma (SEF) is a rare variant of fibrosing fibrosarcomas.
  • SEF presents intermediate malignant potential with high rates of recurrence and metastasis.

Purpose:

  • To report six cases of sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma.
  • To discuss the histological characteristics and immunohistochemical profile of SEF.
  • To differentiate SEF from other soft tissue tumors and carcinoma metastases.

Summary:

  • Six SEF cases are presented, with tumors located in deep soft tissues, ranging from 2.5 to 17 cm.
  • Histology shows small epithelioid cells in a hyaline sclerotic matrix; immunohistochemistry reveals vimentin positivity, with possible EMA positivity.
  • Two patients presented with lung metastases at diagnosis, underscoring the aggressive nature of SEF.

Impact:

  • Improved understanding of SEF's clinicopathological features.
  • Aids in accurate diagnosis and differential diagnosis of SEF.
  • Contributes to better patient management and prognosis prediction for SEF.
