    Summary

Atelectasis, a condition of the tympanic membrane, is an inflammatory process in poorly ventilated ears. This study suggests atelectatic ears are transitional within the otitis media syndrome.

    Area of Science:

    • Otolaryngology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Atelectasis of the tympanic membrane involves displacement toward the promontory.
    • It is considered an inflammatory phenomenon linked to underventilated ears.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the characteristics and implications of tympanic membrane atelectasis.
    • To determine the relationship between atelectasis and otitis media.

    Main Methods:

    • Study included 37 patients (61 ears) with atelectasis graded from stage 1 to 4.
    • Analysis considered reversibility upon ventilation, patient history, and histopathology.

    Main Results:

    • Atelectasis appears to be an inflammatory process in underventilated ears.
    • Mastoid pneumatization was rarely present.
    • Complications included perforation (21%) and chronic granulating external otitis (15%).

    Conclusions:

    • Atelectatic ears are viewed as part of the otitis media syndrome.
    • They represent a transitional stage between secretory and chronic otitis media.
