Pseudomyotonia, a muscle disorder causing stiffness and weakness, can lead to severe airway obstruction. Phenytoin sodium effectively treated both peripheral symptoms and laryngeal spasm in a unique case.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Clinical Medicine
    • Genetics

    Background:

    • Pseudomyotonia is a rare neuromuscular disorder.
    • Characterized by progressive muscle stiffness, weakness, myokymia, hyperhidrosis, and muscle wasting.
    • Typically affects distal extremities and shows continuous muscle activity on electromyography.

    Observation:

    • A case of pseudomyotonia complicated by airway obstruction due to laryngeal spasm is presented.
    • This represents the first reported instance of this specific complication.
    • The patient exhibited characteristic symptoms of pseudomyotonia.

    Findings:

    • Continuous muscle activity at rest was observed on electromyography.
    • Laryngeal spasm led to significant airway obstruction.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Treatment with phenytoin sodium was initiated.
  • Implications:

    • Phenytoin sodium rapidly improved peripheral pseudomyotonia symptoms.
    • The laryngeal spasm and associated airway obstruction were resolved concurrently.
    • This suggests phenytoin sodium as a potential treatment for pseudomyotonia with laryngeal complications.
