  • To describe 5-year transitions in caregiving roles among elderly spouses.
  • To examine associated health outcomes linked to these caregiving transitions.

  • Longitudinal study (5 years) with four interviews.
  • Caregiver Health Effects Study participants (n=818 initially, n=428 for transition analysis).

Main Results:

  • Nearly half of noncaregivers became caregivers or experienced spousal death/placement.
  • Caregiving transitions were associated with declining health, increased depression, and poorer self-reported health.
  • Heavy caregiving correlated with adverse health outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • Caregiving role transitions require monitoring for negative health impacts.
  • Interventions should be personalized based on the caregiver's stage in their trajectory.
