Tuberculosis can cause eye inflammation, including uveitis and retinal lesions. Prompt treatment with anti-tuberculosis drugs effectively resolved ocular inflammation in a patient with a history of tuberculosis.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Ocular inflammation can present with diverse clinical manifestations.
  • Tuberculosis is a significant global health concern with potential extrapulmonary manifestations.

Observation:

  • A healthy 57-year-old woman presented with bilateral uveitic syndrome, including iritis, vitreitis, peripheral retinal lesions, and cystoid macular edema.
  • A significant tuberculin skin test was noted, despite a history of untreated pulmonary tuberculosis.

Findings:

  • Recurrences of ocular inflammation were observed upon cessation of corticosteroid therapy.
  • A six-month course of anti-tuberculosis medication (isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide) led to complete resolution of the inflammation.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Intraocular tuberculosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of peripheral multifocal choroiditis.
  • Early diagnosis and treatment of intraocular tuberculosis can prevent vision loss and manage ocular inflammation effectively.
