Summary

Apolipoprotein D (ApoD) expression in prostate cancer may predict patient survival. ApoD-negative tumors in nonresectable prostate cancer patients indicated shorter survival, suggesting clinical utility.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Biochemistry
  • Molecular Biology

Background:

  • Apolipoprotein D (ApoD) is a protein in human plasma lipid transport.
  • ApoD is regulated by androgens in breast and prostate cancer cell lines.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine ApoD expression in normal, benign, and malignant prostate tissues.
  • To investigate the clinical significance of ApoD expression in prostate cancer.

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemical assay was used to detect ApoD expression.
  • Prostate tissues (normal, benign hyperplasia, carcinoma) were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • ApoD was detected in normal, benign, and malignant prostate tissues.
  • ApoD expression in carcinomas did not correlate with patient age, tumor stage, grade, or PSA levels.

Related Experiment Videos

  • ApoD-negative immunostaining predicted shorter survival in nonresectable prostate cancer patients (p=0.02).
  • Conclusions:

    • ApoD expression in prostate carcinomas may be clinically useful.
    • ApoD status could help identify prostate lesions with different clinical evolution.
