Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Oncology
  • Neurology

Background:

  • Paraneoplastic syndromes are uncommon manifestations of cancer, significantly affecting patient prognosis and treatment strategies in otolaryngology.
  • Understanding these syndromes is crucial for comprehensive oncologic care, particularly in head and neck malignancies.

Observation:

  • Two distinct cases of paraneoplastic syndromes associated with head and neck cancers are presented.
  • A 45-year-old male with hypopharyngeal carcinoma experienced polymyalgia rheumatica, resolving post-surgery.
  • A 54-year-old male with tongue squamous cell carcinoma exhibited paraneoplastic leukocytosis.

Findings:

  • Polymyalgia rheumatica as a paraneoplastic feature of hypopharyngeal carcinoma is a novel finding.
  • Leukocytosis can be a paraneoplastic manifestation of squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue.
  • The incidence of various paraneoplastic syndromes in upper aerodigestive tract cancers, including laryngeal oat cell carcinoma, is reviewed.

Implications:

  • Early recognition of paraneoplastic syndromes can lead to timely diagnosis and improved management of head and neck cancers.
  • These findings highlight the importance of considering systemic manifestations in patients with head and neck malignancies.
  • Further research into the mechanisms and prevalence of paraneoplastic syndromes in otolaryngology is warranted.
