Area of Science:

  • Behavioral Science
  • Sleep Medicine
  • Psychology

Background:

  • Chronic primary insomnia is a prevalent condition affecting patient well-being.
  • Existing treatments may not be accessible or suitable for all primary care patients.
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy is an established treatment for insomnia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of an abbreviated cognitive-behavioral insomnia therapy (ACBT).
  • To compare ACBT with a brief sleep hygiene intervention (SHC).
  • To assess treatment outcomes in primary care patients with chronic insomnia.

Main Methods:

  • A single-blind, randomized group design was employed.
  • Participants received either a 2-session ACBT or a brief SHC.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Outcomes were measured using sleep logs and validated questionnaires.
  • Main Results:

    • ACBT yielded significantly greater improvements in insomnia symptoms and sleep-related self-efficacy compared to SHC.
    • ACBT demonstrated consistent positive effects across participants.
    • A substantial proportion of ACBT patients achieved clinically significant improvements, with over 50% reporting reduced wake time and improved Insomnia Symptom Questionnaire scores.

    Conclusions:

    • Abbreviated cognitive-behavioral insomnia therapy (ACBT) is an effective intervention for primary care patients.
    • ACBT successfully reduces subjective sleep disturbance and insomnia symptoms.
    • This brief therapy offers a viable treatment option for chronic insomnia in primary care settings.
