Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Wildlife Biology
  • Comparative Physiology

Background:

  • The Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica) is an important wild ungulate in Iberian ecosystems.
  • Establishing species-specific reference intervals for hematologic and biochemical parameters is crucial for health assessments.
  • Limited data exists on the reference ranges for these parameters in free-ranging Spanish ibex populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine reference intervals for hematologic and biochemical parameters in clinically normal, free-ranging Spanish ibexes.
  • To investigate potential differences in these parameters based on sex and age.

Main Methods:

  • Blood samples were collected from 529 Spanish ibexes (Capra pyrenaica) in Andalusia, Spain.
  • Thirteen hematologic and 32 biochemical parameters were analyzed.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Data from clinically normal, live, free-ranging animals were used to establish reference intervals, with analyses of sex and age-related variations.
  • Main Results:

    • Reference intervals were established for 13 hematologic and 32 biochemical parameters.
    • Significant differences in eight biochemical parameters were observed between male and female ibexes.
    • Significant differences in 20 hematologic and biochemical parameters were found between different age classes.

    Conclusions:

    • This study provides essential reference intervals for Spanish ibex blood parameters.
    • Sex and age are significant factors influencing hematologic and biochemical values in this species.
    • These findings are vital for wildlife health monitoring and conservation efforts for the Spanish ibex.
