Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Pathophysiology
  • Nutritional Science

Context:

  • Anorexia is a frequent physiological symptom in older adults.
  • It often occurs during acute or chronic pathologies as an adaptive stress response.
  • The study of anorexia necessitates a comprehensive evaluation of oral intake, etiology, and nutritional impact.

Purpose:

  • To highlight the physiological significance of anorexia in aging and illness.
  • To emphasize the need for evaluating oral intake, causes, and nutritional consequences.
  • To recommend early artificial nutrition for specific patient groups.

Summary:

  • Anorexia is a complex symptom in older persons and during illness, acting as a physiological stress response.
  • Evaluation should include oral intake, etiology, and nutritional repercussions on body composition, function, and quality of life.
  • Early artificial nutrition is advised for adults with severely diminished oral intake (7-10 days) in acute pathology or significant weight loss in chronic pathology.

Impact:

  • Recognizing anorexia as a physiological response is crucial for timely intervention.
  • Adequate artificial nutrition can prevent undernutrition and manage anorexia repercussions.
  • This approach ensures better management of nutritional status and quality of life in affected individuals.
