Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Allergology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Gold dermatitis incidence linked to ear piercing rose in Japan in the early 1990s.
  • Clinically apparent gold dermatitis has become rare in recent years.
  • The underlying prevalence of gold allergy requires investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the trend of gold dermatitis in Japan.
  • To determine the current frequency of gold allergy.
  • To assess changes in gold allergy presentation over time.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of patch test results for gold chloride (0.2%) from March 1990 to December 2001.
  • Inclusion of 653 patients tested during the study period.
  • Comparison of positive reaction rates between different time intervals and demographic groups.

Main Results:

  • A total of 55 patients (8.4%) exhibited a positive reaction to gold.
  • Women showed a significantly higher positive reaction rate (10.2%) compared to men (0.8%).
  • No significant difference in positive rates was observed between 1990-1995 (9.2%) and 1996-2001 (7.2%).

Conclusions:

  • The number of patients with gold allergy has not decreased.
  • Gold allergy has transitioned from clinically overt to an occult state in Japan.
  • This shift necessitates continued vigilance and diagnostic approaches for gold allergy.
