Area of Science:

  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Mass Spectrometry

Context:

  • Establishing accurate Reference Values (R.V.) for biological fluids presents significant analytical challenges.
  • Laboratories require instrumentation with low detection limits and methods minimizing sample manipulation to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Controlling pre-analytical factors is crucial for ensuring low blank levels and variability.

Purpose:

  • To highlight the difficulties in determining reference values for biological fluids.
  • To present hyphenated techniques with low detection limits as a key tool for reliable analysis.
  • To establish mass spectrometry, specifically ICP-MS, as a reference technique for metallic species determination.

Summary:

  • Analyzing biological fluids for metallic species requires advanced techniques due to low concentration levels and contamination risks.
