Summary

Endometriosis negatively impacts oocyte and embryo quality, potentially due to an altered follicular environment. If these effects are non-genetic, treating folliculogenesis may resolve endometriosis-related infertility.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Gynecology
  • Cell Biology

Background:

  • Endometriosis is associated with diminished oocyte and embryo quality.
  • An altered intrafollicular environment is hypothesized to cause poor oocyte quality and reduced implantation rates in women with endometriosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the origins of impaired follicular development in endometriosis.
  • To determine if endometriosis-associated infertility is treatable through modulation of folliculogenesis.

Main Methods:

  • Review of prospective and retrospective clinical trials.
  • Analysis of the intrafollicular milieu in endometriosis.

Main Results:

  • Clinical trials indicate reduced oocyte and embryo quality in women with endometriosis.

Related Experiment Videos

  • An altered intrafollicular environment is proposed as the cause of poor oocyte quality and lower implantation capacity of resulting embryos.
  • Conclusions:

    • The origin of impaired follicular development in endometriosis (genomic vs. non-genomic) remains unclear.
    • If non-genomic, modulating folliculogenesis could treat endometriosis-associated infertility.
    • Genomic defects would require unavailable genetic therapies.
