Summary

Social phobia patients exhibit impaired eyelid conditional discrimination learning, indicating difficulties in modifying behavior during aversive conditioning tasks. Healthy controls demonstrated appropriate conditional discrimination ability.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychology
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Eyelid conditional discrimination learning (ECDL) selectively tests temporal lobe function with minimal motivational demands.
  • Social phobia (SP) is a condition characterized by significant anxiety in social situations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the ECDL abilities in unmedicated social phobia patients compared to healthy controls.
  • To assess if social phobia affects the capacity for aversive conditioning and behavioral modification.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-five unmedicated social phobia patients and 25 age/gender-matched healthy controls participated.
  • An ECDL paradigm was used, presenting visual stimuli followed by an aversive airpuff (reinforced trials) or not (unreinforced trials).
  • Conditioned responses (CRs), reflex eyelid closures to stimuli, were measured.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Both social phobia patients and healthy controls showed differences between reinforced and unreinforced trials.
  • However, CR frequency did not increase over time in social phobia patients.
  • Healthy controls exhibited appropriate conditional discrimination ability.

Conclusions:

  • Social phobia patients demonstrate an impairment in adequate behavior modification within an aversive conditioning task.
  • This suggests potential deficits in temporal lobe function or associative learning processes in social phobia.
