    Area of Science:

    • Social Sciences
    • Higher Education Studies

    Background:

    • Limited research exists on academic retirement patterns.
    • Existing literature suggests academics may not follow typical retirement trajectories, potentially mirroring scientists' retirement behaviors.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the post-retirement professional activities of academics.
    • To identify factors influencing continued engagement in research and writing after retirement.

    Main Methods:

    • Data were collected from 207 academics across various institution types (state, private, Ivy League, large state universities).
    • Analysis focused on the extent of continued professional engagement post-retirement.

    Main Results:

    • Academics, to varying degrees, continue professional activities post-retirement.
    • Academics with high professional visibility are more likely to engage in post-retirement research and/or writing.

    Conclusions:

    • Academic retirement is not a complete cessation of professional work.
    • The psychological centrality of pre-retirement work appears to be a significant factor in sustained post-retirement professional activity.
