Increased cardiac BNP expression associated with myocardial ischemia

Elevated brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels may not always indicate heart failure. Myocardial ischemia, even without left ventricular dysfunction, can increase BNP gene expression and plasma concentrations, suggesting ischemia as a contributing factor.
