We describe the sonographic appearance of bladder malacoplakia, a rare condition presenting as multiple polypoid masses, in a young patient with Russell-Silver syndrome. This case highlights a unique presentation of bladder malacoplakia in a patient with underlying genetic syndrome.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Radiology
  • Pediatric Nephrology

Background:

  • Bladder malacoplakia is a rare, chronic inflammatory condition characterized by the presence of Michaelis-Gutmann bodies.
  • Russell-Silver syndrome is a genetic disorder associated with intrauterine growth restriction and characteristic facial features.

Observation:

  • A 16-year-old female patient with Russell-Silver syndrome presented with symptoms of renal failure and urinary tract infection.
  • Sonographic examination revealed multiple, distinct polypoid solid masses within the urinary bladder.

Findings:

  • The sonographic features observed were consistent with bladder malacoplakia.
  • This presentation is unusual, particularly in conjunction with Russell-Silver syndrome and concurrent renal compromise.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case expands the spectrum of sonographic findings associated with bladder malacoplakia.
  • It underscores the importance of considering rare diagnoses in patients with complex genetic syndromes and atypical presentations.
  • Early sonographic detection can facilitate timely diagnosis and management of bladder malacoplakia.
