Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Psychiatry
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a significant public health concern.
  • Suicide rates among the elderly population warrant focused research.
  • The interplay between AUD and suicide risk in older adults is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the association between alcohol use disorder and suicide risk in elderly individuals.
  • To investigate the influence of social stressors on suicide in older adults, with and without AUD.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective case-control study design was employed.
  • The study included 85 suicide cases (aged 65+) and 153 population controls.
  • Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) criteria were used for mental disorder diagnoses.

Main Results:

  • A history of alcohol dependence or misuse was found in 35% of elderly men and 18% of women who died by suicide.
  • Alcohol use disorder was a rare condition in the control group (2% men, 1% women).
  • AUD was an independent predictor of suicide risk for both sexes and associated with younger age and less severe physical illness among suicide cases.

Conclusions:

  • Alcohol use disorder is a significant risk factor for suicide in elderly men and women.
  • Targeted prevention programs for elderly individuals with AUD are crucial.
  • Further research into social stressors' role in elderly suicide is warranted.
