Appendiceal Tumors: A Narrative Review.

This study investigated age-related changes in allergic responses, finding no significant differences in immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels or type 2 cytokine production between young and old adults. The decline in allergy onset with age remains questionable.

  • Allergic disease incidence and severity appear to decrease in older individuals, possibly due to reduced serum total IgE.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the mechanisms behind age-related changes in allergic symptom onset and severity.
  • To evaluate serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) and soluble CD23 (sCD23) levels in young and old adults.
  • To assess in vitro type 2 cytokine production (IL-4, IL-10, IL-13) in response to stimulation.

Main Methods:

  • Compared serum IgE and sCD23 levels in young (20-64 years) and old (70-93 years) individuals.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings do not support an impairment in type 2 cytokine production or serum IgE/sCD23 levels with aging.
    • Previous research indicated no impairment in the efferent branch of allergic responses in the elderly.
    • It is questionable whether current evidence validates the statement that allergic disease incidence decreases with age.
